The Maker
Meet George
George has been turning wood on the lathe since 1987, when a chance encounter with a spalted maple log in his father's barn sparked a lifelong passion. What started as a weekend hobby quickly grew into a craft he couldn't put down.
Every bowl is turned by hand in his rural Michigan workshop. George selects each piece of timber for its grain character, often rescuing storm-felled trees and urban lumber that would otherwise go to waste. The result is functional art that tells the story of the wood it came from.
When he's not at the lathe, George teaches woodturning workshops and volunteers with local youth programs, passing the craft to the next generation of makers.
